Turkey Scolds Europe

At a recent conference in Cologne on the future of Europe's Muslims, Ali Erbaş, the head of Turkey's state religious authority, the Diyanet, railed against what he called the "increase in anti-Islamic discourse and actions... [that] threaten European multiculturalism."

In his keynote address to the conference, hosted by Turkey's main Islamic body in Germany, DITIB -- based in the Cologne Central Mosque, which Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan inaugurated during a visit to Germany in September -- Erbaş declared:

What is Being Taught at the "Islamic University of Europe" in the Netherlands?

A recent development in a two-year-old corruption scandal -- involving the so-called "Islamic University of Europe" in the Netherlands -- has renewed public interest in the institution, involving tax fraud.

Its rector, professor Nedim Bahçekapılı, has gone missing after Dutch prosecutors decided to arrest him as part of an investigation addressing the school's "tax evasion of millions of Euros, corruption, and opening fraudulent classes." The Dutch Ministry of Justice and Security said that the rector could not be found and is believed to have left the country.

Turkey's War on Christian Missionaries

The day after American pastor Andrew Brunson was released from Turkish prison, another Christian who had been living for nearly two decades in the country was detained by Turkish authorities, and told that he had two weeks to leave the country -- without his wife and three children. The American-Canadian evangelist, David Byle, not only suffered several detentions and interrogations over the years, but he had been targeted for deportation on three occasions. Each time, he was saved by court rulings. This time, however, he was unable to prevent banishment, and left the country after two days in a detention center.

Turkey Turns on America

On December 18, the day before U.S. President Donald Trump ordered a full withdrawal of American troops from Syria -- on the grounds that the U.S. "had defeated ISIS" -- Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced that Turkey was mounting a new incursion into northern Syria.

The same day, December 18, Erdogan gave a speech in which he said:

"We officially announced last week that we would start a military operation on the east of Euphrates. And we did it... We discussed these things with Mr. Trump too. He gave us positive responses... Until the last terrorist in the region becomes ineffective, we will rake through the Syrian territories inch by inch... We will breathe down their necks.

Turkey Aiming to Head a Global Islamic Union Governed by Sharia

Turkey appears to be accelerating its endeavor to establish an Ottoman-style Islamic government encompassing several Muslim nations. One such effort was apparent in early November at the second "International Islamic Union Congress," in Istanbul. The conference is sponsored mainly by the Strategic Research Center for Defenders of Justice (ASSAM), headed by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's chief military advisor, Adnan Tanrıverdi, a retired Islamist lieutenant general.
